New CP WJIK bolts out of Monroeville for Thomasville

For a long time I never included new, unbuilt construction permits in the listings, because more often than not they'd be sold, get returned or moved a hundred times before hitting the airwaves.  I decided to include them in an effort to get as much radio-info as possible on the site.  Who knows if any of them will ever get on the air, however.

One that was recently permitted to move is WJIK. Originally licensed to Monroeville in Monroe County (oddly enough), owners Penfold Communications have received authorization to move the station to Thomasville in Clarke County, about 35 miles NW as the crow flies.  Licensed to nearby Fulton, the station if it were to ever go on the air, would serve most of northern Clarke County, which ain't a whole lot.

Translator updates

W287AQ tossed a license to cover to the FCC the other day, from a facility near West Blocton.  I was in the area over the Christmas holidays and heard nothing.

Up in Oneonta, W237DH is permitted to get a hike in power, up to 85 watts.  This will expand the coverage to include more of Cleveland, Nectar, Locust Fork and Highland Lake, but it is still a far cry from being a true county-wide replacement for WKLD, which left Blount County for the greener pastures of Huntsville.  (It's still not on the air yet, but was reported to be testing around Christmastime.)  The translator, on 95.3, relays the only radio station left in the county, AM WCRL.

W284AQ has another move pending

It's still heading east towards the Big Ol' Salty Ham.  An APP has appeared in the database moving it east of West Blocton in Bibb County.

Looking for older posts?

If you're looking for older posts, they're still over at the other blog site, here.  The host (Gandi) does not have any export options to easily bring posts from there to here, so we'll just pick up here for the future.  If you want to see older posts, though, the old site will remain active.  Their system was just a little too finicky to use on a regular basis, so things are migrating here instead.

Comments, questions and complaints are welcome!

Another translator creeps towards Birmingham — is that the ultimate destination?

It's W284AQ, and it's slowly creeping across Tuscaloosa County. Originally located at or near the 1150 AM towers northwest of Northport, the station got a permit to move just east of Lake Tuscaloosa; shortly thereafter it got a permit to broadcast from the Brookwood area with 250 watts. It's not got a permit to move a little further, this time to the Vance/West Blockton area.

As far as I can tell, it's broadcasting WALN out of Carrollton. The signal was pretty weak in Tuscaloosa and almost absent in Brookwood, so I doubt it's broadcasting from where the FCC thinks.

No idea how close it can get to Tuscaloosa, being 2nd adjacent to both WZZK and WENN-FM, but it'll be interesting to see where it finally winds up.

WLWI construction permit will move transmitter site out of Montgomery, to rural Mosses

Not ''Moses'', Mosses. Yeah, I've never heard of it either. It's about halfway between Selma and Montgomery.

Should the move actually occur, the station will lose most if not all coverage in the Auburn area and Tuskegee will be fringe. The trade-off is gaining coverage west of Selma and around Camden in Wilcox County. Yawn.

Something tells me this will either expire unbuilt, or it's some Cumulus chess-move to upgrade a station elsewhere.
I'm in the process of switching over to Blogger from Gandi. Stay tuned!
